The Surrey town of Redhill lies in the Reigate and Banstead district of the county. The town is an important commuter area for London, due north of Redhill. On Saturday 10th April 1830 the town organised a race meeting over a 5 mile course starting from a grass field behind Mr Nicholl’s farm in Redhill, opposite the eighth milestone on the Edgware Road and progressing along the same road to the third milestone, just beyond the windmill of Mr Andersons. The stakes were 25 sovereigns for each horse to enter, with the winner taking all, except that the last horse had to pay the stakes of the second horse. The event proved to be a triumph for Mr Caldecott who occupied the first two places, his chestnut mare getting the better of his chestnut horse which was ridden by Captain Becher. |
